National Junior Honor Society
Who We Are: National Junior Honor Society, or NJHS is a worldwide organization that consists of middle school students around the country. Selection of members is based on five criteria: citizenship, service, leadership, scholarship and character. Members must maintain a high grade point average (the national minimum is 3.0 on a 4.0 scale) and become good citizens by participating in service projects. The NJHS requires students to serve the community, school, and/or other organizations.
Our History: The National Junior Honor Society was founded in 1929 in the hopes of creating an organization that would recognize and encourage academic achievement while also developing other characteristics essential to citizens in a democracy. The ideals of scholarship, character, service, and citizenship remain as relevant today as they were in 1929. Through the NJHS chapter service activities and academic standards, members maintain and extend the qualities that won them selection.
Current NJHS Members can look at their Canvas course for updated information.

Selection Guidelines
Selection for NJHS is based on the following 5 criteria:
- Scholarship
- Citizenship
- Leadership
- Character
- Service
Invitations to apply are offered to 7th graders in the 3rd quarter and are based on having a cumulative grade point average of 90 or above in core classes (Math, English, Science and Social Studies).
Once the applications are returned, teachers will complete an evaluation for each candidate. Next, the NJHS teacher committee will meet and discuss acceptance or rejection of each candidate. If a student is not selected, he/she has the opportunity to appeal and he/she will be considered further based off his/her appeal paperwork.
All those who apply will be notified by the end of March/beginning of April.
Decisions about acceptance are made by the Ronny Crownover NJHS Faculty Council, and are based on a point system that rates the above 5-mentioned selection criteria. If you would like to appeal your decision, please contact Taylor Hotchkiss thotchkiss@dentonisd.org or Alexa Thompson athompson4@dentonisd.org.
